Meet the new fiberglass Tramp trailable trimaran by Haines Hunter. She behaves like a lady, has the reputation of a real goer, performs like a charm and when it comes to packing in more safety and comfort features from stem to stern, Tramp certainly makes big waves.
Designed by Ian Farrier, as a day sailer with camping accommodation, the Tramp is an "aquatic beach buggy" with all-round performance to shame much larger yachts, the capacity to carry a half dozen people and the accommodation to sleep four campers under its cockpit-encompassing vinyl cabin.
Design Features
A very simple boat, the Tramp is basically a day sailer, measuring 5.95m (19'6") overall, and a big 4.5m (14'9") wide. The huge central cockpit can easily seat 6 adults with enough room left over for a full size dinner table! Mast and sail controls are located right in the cockpit, while the kick-up centerboard is under the cockpit floor. There is ample storage in the bow, stern and cockpit. An ice box is built in under the cockpit floor, while the optional sink and galley unit can be fitted in the small cuddy cabin.
A self-draining anchor locker is located on the foredeck, and aft is
the uniquely molded outboard recess. This positions the outboard well forward
and overcomes the major cavitation problems associated with stern mounted
outboards.
For overnighting, the Tramp has an optional vinyl cabin, which is fitted around the cockpit coaming, on its own aluminum frame. In just a few minutes, the Tramp has a roomy, weather and insect proof cabin, with full sitting headroom, two single berths along the seats and a roomy double on the cockpit floor. Windows and doorway are fully screened, and can be left open for venilation. Stuffy, restrictive cabins are no longer a problem.
Tramp can be sailed with the cabin on, or with just the roof, so that wind drag is minimal, and the whole cockpit is shaded. Picnic lunches in shaded, breeze cooled comfort are now a reality. To convert back to full cabin, just clip in the sides and you're ready for the night.
Sailing
The Tramp sails very fast with little heel and this, coupled with the wide, safe decks, make the Tramp a firm favorite with families. Crew can lounge anywhere on deck with no danger of being thrown into the water by sudden unexpected heeling.
The simple3/4 rig makes sail handling a breeze, no winches are required, and Tramp is easily sailed singlehanded. The center hull features a very fine entry to cut effortlessly through a chop while the wide flat stern damps out pitching and encourages early planing.
The three hulls give great directional stability and 10 knot plus averages can be achieved, with exhilarating bursts of 15 knots or more, all with fingertip control.
Windward ability is exceptional, ease of tacking particularly so. Tramp will even go to windward and tack easily simply by using sails alone, with rudder lifted clear of the water!
Whether it's driving hard to windward in a steep chop or just drifting along, the Tramp is an outstanding performer.
Safety
Tramp is the ideal safe family yacht. Her enormous 4.5m (14'9") beam gives unmatched stability, while foam buoyancy and a total of 7 major separate compartments make her virtually unsinkable.
Tramp's lack of heel, light weight and wide beam overcome the danger of swamping; the self-draining cockpit is completely enclosed and away from the water offering an enormous amount of room. When it comes to kids on board, there's simply no better or safer boat on the water.
Trailering/Launching
Tramp's major feature is the unique Farrier folding system (patented) for variable overall beam. Thoroughly tested and proven over the last 7 years (one prototype even sailed successfully in the 1979 Brisbane to Gladstone Ocean Race in up to 45 knot winds) it allows the floats to be easily extended or retracted by one person, in just 2 or 3 minutes.
Not requiring ballast, Tramp is light and can be towed by even 4 cylinder cars.
Once at the ramp the rig takes about 15 minutes for just one person to set up, and Tramp is launched folded using no more ramp space than conventional boats. Stability when folded afloat is excellent and the floats can be unfolded while motoring or sailing away, even in rough water.
Once sailing is over, retrieving back on to the trailer is simple. Floats are folded while approaching the ramp, which allows the float bows to be used as very handy step-off points. You don't have to jump into water of doubtful depth. The trailer, as with launching, is submerged no further than the rims, and being light, Tramp is winched on without difficulty.
Construction

Hulls are fiberglass and coremat sandwich construction with all structural bulkheads being fiberglass moldings with high strength unidirectional reinforcement where necessary. Embedded metal plates and heavy woven roving reinforcement at all major stress points.
